Buying Affordable Art: The Complete Guide (2026)
Share
There's a persistent misconception about art: that it has to be expensive to be good. That an original painting is something for people with a big house and an even bigger budget. That affordable art is, by definition, a compromise.
I don't believe that for a second. And as an artist who deliberately creates works for a maximum of €50, I know that buying affordable art is very much possible without sacrificing authenticity, quality, or meaning. In this guide, I'll explain exactly how.
What Does "Affordable Art" Actually Mean?
Affordable is relative. For some, €500 is a steal, for others, €50 is already a consideration. But in the art world, "affordable art" typically refers to works under €200, with a strong concentration under €100 and €50.
What affordable art does not mean: cheap in the sense of worthless. The price of a work of art says something about its size, material, the artist's reputation, and market position. It says nothing about the intention, craftsmanship, or emotional value of the work.
A small color study for €35 can have just as much impact on a wall as a large painting for €2,000. Sometimes more, because it's intimate. Close. Personal.
"I don't create the Affordable Art collection because I can't make larger works. I create it because I believe everyone deserves something real on their wall. Something made by human hands, with intention and care."
— Jordy Koumans, KOJO Art
Original vs. Print: What Are You Buying?
This is the first choice you make when you want to buy affordable art. And it's an important one, because an original and a print are fundamentally different.
An original painting
Exists only once. The layers of paint are still there. The decisions the artist made are visible in every brushstroke. You can feel the texture. There is no second copy of this work in the world.
Originals come with a certificate of authenticity and are signed by the artist. They have a physical presence that a print can never match.
An art print
Is a high-quality reproduction of an original work, printed on premium paper. Prints are more accessible in price and available in multiple sizes. They are perfect if you want the aesthetic of a work without the investment of an original.
At KOJO Art, every work starts as an original painting. Prints are therefore always based on a real, hand-painted work.
When do you choose what?
Choose an original if: you want something unique, appreciate the texture of paint, or want a work that no one else has.
Choose a print if: you want to style multiple spaces, want to change regularly, or want a larger size for a lower price.
Choose Print Club. if: you want to be surprised monthly with new art for a fixed, low price.
What to Look for When Buying Affordable Art?
Not all affordable art is created equal. These are the things I would look for if I were buying art myself:
1. Is it truly original?
Always ask for a certificate of authenticity with an original work. A serious artist will provide this as standard. The certificate confirms that the work is hand-painted, by whom, and when. Without a certificate, you're buying a promise.
2. Do you know the artist?
Buying affordable art from an artist you know, or whose story you know, gives the work extra meaning. Read their background, visit their studio, follow their process. Art with a story is art that sticks with you, even if you walk past it every day.
3. Quality of materials
For originals: ask about the medium (acrylic, oil, watercolor) and the support (paper, canvas, panel). Acrylic on paper is fine for smaller works and affordable art, but ask if it's acid-free paper for longer durability. For prints: pay attention to the paper weight and whether it's archival (lightfast) printed.
4. Return policy and shipping
Buying art online is different from in a gallery. You can't examine the work up close. Always check the return policy and how the work is packaged and shipped. Careful packaging is a sign of an artist who takes their work seriously.
Affordable Art for Every Interior
A common concern: will affordable art fit my interior? The answer is almost always yes, if you pay attention to color and scale.
Minimalist and Scandinavian interior
Choose abstract works in neutral or earthy tones. One small original on a white wall has more impact than a busy gallery wall. Less is more.
Warm and eclectic interior
Here you can play more with color. Terracotta, ochre, deep green. Multiple small originals next to each other form a gallery wall with character. Affordable art is precisely an advantage here: you can combine multiple works without a large budget.
Rental home or temporary space
Smaller originals are ideal. They are easy to move, fit in any size space, and simply go with you when you move. Buying affordable art for a rental home is one of the smartest ways to make a temporary place truly your own.

I paint larger works that cost hundreds of euros. I make prints that are accessible to a broad audience. But the Affordable Art collection is something else. It exists because I believe the barrier to original art is too high.
Not everyone can or wants to spend €500 on a painting. But everyone deserves something real on their wall. Something made by human hands. Something that exists because an artist made a decision, chose a color, made a brushstroke.
The works in the Affordable Art collection are smaller sizes, color studies, experimental compositions. They are affordable because they are smaller, not because they are less valuable. Each work is unique. Each work exists only once. And each work comes with a certificate of authenticity, because even for €35, art deserves that treatment.
"Buying affordable art doesn't mean settling for less. It means choosing wisely: a small original that is real, over a large print that isn't."
— Jordy Koumans
Frequently Asked Questions about Buying Affordable Art
What is a good price for affordable art?
That depends on what you're looking for. For prints, you can start from €10-15. For original works, €25-50 is a realistic budget for smaller sizes from emerging artists. At KOJO Art, all works in the Affordable Art collection are for max. €50.
Is affordable art also original art?
Yes, absolutely. Affordable and original are not mutually exclusive. Smaller sizes, color studies, and works by emerging artists are often affordable yet completely original, unique, and hand-painted.
Where can I buy affordable art in the Netherlands?
Online from artists who sell directly, like KOJO Art. But also at art markets, open studios, and via platforms like Etsy. The advantage of buying directly from the artist: you know exactly what you're getting, and the money goes directly to the creator.
How do I know if affordable art is of good quality?
Look for: a certificate of authenticity, information about materials, transparency about the process, and an artist you can follow and get to know. Quality is not just in the work itself, but also in how it is presented and delivered.
Can I buy affordable art as a gift?
Certainly. An original painting for max. €50 is one of the most personal gifts you can give. It's unique, it's handmade, and it remains visible for years. Much more personal than a bouquet of flowers or a gift card.
Is affordable art shipped worldwide?
At KOJO Art, yes. All works are carefully packaged and shipped worldwide with track & trace. Delivery times within Europe are typically 3-7 business days.
