Abstract painting in the living room: how to choose the right piece

Short answer: An abstract painting in the living room works best when chosen for its atmosphere, not its color code. Choose a size that fills the wall, hang it at eye level, and let the artwork define the space. Original or print: both options are available at KOJO Art, shipped worldwide.
An abstract painting in the living room can completely transform a space. Not because it screams for attention, but because it adds something hard to define: atmosphere, direction, character. In this article, I share how I personally think about choosing an abstract piece for the living room, and what questions you can ask yourself before making a choice.
Why abstract art works so well in the living room
Abstract art has no literal message. There is no subject you need to understand, no story you need to know. What you see is what you feel. And that makes it so versatile for a living room wall.
A figurative painting demands attention. An abstract work provides space. It adapts to the viewer, to the day, to the light in the room. That's precisely why I love painting abstract art: the work lives along with you.

The most common mistake when choosing an abstract painting for the living room is going too small. A piece that seems large in a store or online can disappear on a tall wall or above a wide sofa.
A rule of thumb I use: the painting should cover at least two-thirds of the width of the sofa or furniture below it. Better slightly too big than too small. A statement piece gives the room direction. A too-small piece gets lost on the wall.
For a reading nook or smaller wall, a 60 x 80 cm piece, like my painting Soho | Original or the corresponding Soho | Premium Art Print, is sufficient. For above a sofa or as a focal point in the living room, I recommend at least 80 x 100 cm.
Unsure about the size? Cut a piece of newspaper to size and temporarily hang it on the wall. This way, you'll immediately see if the proportions are correct.
Color: matching or contrasting
Abstract paintings don't have to match your interior. They can also contrast. The point is to create a conversation between the artwork and the space.
In my own work, I use many earthy tones: ochre, terracotta, sand beige, moss green, off-white. These colors are naturally versatile. They complement warm wooden floors, linen sofas, and concrete walls. But they also hold their own next to a dark accent wall or a colorful rug.
Want a calmer effect? Choose a piece whose dominant color is echoed in a cushion, a vase, or another accessory in the room. Want more tension? Choose a piece that falls just outside the room's color palette.
Atmosphere: what do you want to feel in the space?
This is the question I prefer to ask people who ask me for advice. Not: what color goes with my sofa? But: how do you want to feel when you walk into the living room?
Peace and calm call for works with little contrast, soft transitions, and a limited color palette. Think of color field compositions, minimalist planes, subtle texture.
Energy and character demand more tension in the work. Bold color contrasts, dynamic composition, visible brushstrokes or palette knife work.
Abstract art comes in all gradients in between. The point is to choose consciously, instead of going for what seems "safe."

An abstract painting in the living room is best hung at eye level. This is, on average, about 145 to 155 centimeters from the floor to the center of the artwork. Not higher, even if that sometimes feels more logical with high ceilings.
Above the sofa, an additional rule applies: leave at least 20 to 30 centimeters of space between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the painting. This way, the artwork remains connected to the furniture without pressing against it.
Hanging multiple pieces next to each other? Keep the space between them consistent, preferably 5 to 10 centimeters. And make sure the centerlines of the artworks are at the same height.
Original or print: what suits you?
This is a question I often get. And the honest answer is: it depends on what you're looking for.
An original abstract painting is unique. It exists only once. It has texture, a story, a process. You see the hand of the creator. That gives a work a presence that a print doesn't have.
A high-quality art print brings the same composition and color palette into your home, at a more accessible price. Ideal if you want to decorate multiple rooms, or if you're still discovering which style suits you. KOJO Art's abstract art prints are available in multiple sizes, ready for framing.

Which abstract painting suits a living room?
An abstract painting fits a living room if its size, color, and atmosphere align with the space. For above a sofa, choose at least 80 x 100 cm. Earthy tones are versatile and suit almost any interior.
How big should a painting be above a sofa?
A painting above a sofa should ideally be at least two-thirds the width of the sofa. For a standard three-seater sofa of 220 cm, this means at least 140 cm wide. Leave 20 to 30 cm of space between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the painting.
What size abstract painting fits in a living room?
For above a sofa or as a statement piece, at least 80 x 100 cm is recommended. For a reading nook or smaller wall, a 60 x 80 cm piece is sufficient. Use the two-thirds rule: the artwork should cover at least two-thirds of the width of the furniture below it.
Does an abstract painting need to match my interior's color scheme?
No, an abstract painting does not have to match your interior's color scheme. It can also contrast. What's important is that there's a visual connection through color, atmosphere, or style. Works with earthy tones fit almost any interior.
How high should I hang an abstract painting in the living room?
Hang an abstract painting with its center at about 150 centimeters from the floor. Above a sofa: leave 20 to 30 centimeters of space between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the painting.
What's the difference between an original painting and an art print?
An original painting is unique, hand-painted, and has texture and physical presence. An art print is a high-quality reproduction of an original work, more affordable, and available in multiple copies.
Can I commission a custom abstract painting?
Yes. Contact us via the contact page, and I'll be happy to discuss a piece that suits your space, color palette, and atmosphere.
