Buying Abstract Art: What to Look for as a Beginner?
Buying abstract art can sometimes feel overwhelming. So much choice, so many prices, so many styles. This is the guide I wish I had myself. No theory, no art jargon. Just four concrete steps to help you choose a piece that truly suits you.
Step 1: Which style of abstract art appeals to you?
There are three directions I encounter most often. Color field is calm and works with large areas of color without a narrative, just color and feeling. Expressive abstract is dynamic, with visible brushstrokes and movement in the work. Minimalist abstract uses few elements and a lot of space, almost meditative. At KOJO Art, I primarily work in the color field tradition: large planes, earthy tones, serenity without boredom.
Not sure which style suits you yet? Look at which works hold your attention for longer than 10 seconds. That's your answer.
Step 2: What size painting fits in my space?
A rule of thumb that always works: the width of the artwork should be approximately two-thirds of the furniture piece below it. So, above a 200 cm sofa, choose a piece about 130 cm wide, or a combination of smaller works. Above a 120 cm desk, an 80 cm piece fits well. Too small is the biggest risk, not too big.
"Too small is the most common mistake when buying art. A piece should have presence."

Step 3: Original or print, and what is a fair price?
Art prints start at €10 and go up to €80 for larger sizes from most serious artists. Originals by emerging artists typically cost between €150 and €500. At KOJO Art, originals are €150 to €275, prints start from €10. I previously wrote a detailed comparison in art print or original painting if you want to know more about the difference.
Hesitating between print and original?
Prints from €10 · Originals €150 to €275 · Certificate of authenticity · Directly from the artist · Shipping throughout Europe
Step 4: How do I recognize quality in abstract art?
For prints, pay attention to paper weight (at least 200 gsm for a quality print) and whether the artist is transparent about the printing process. For originals, a certificate of authenticity is a basic standard. But the most important quality characteristic is the story behind the work: does the artist know why they create this? Can they explain it without marketing jargon? Then you're good.
Buying art starts with one piece that moves you
You don't have to understand everything about abstract art to buy it. You just need to know how you feel when you look at it. Start there. View all works or read more about KOJO Art and Jordy Koumans.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if abstract art fits my interior?
Look at the colors already present in your space and choose a piece that enhances or complements one of those colors. Abstract art doesn't have to match, but it shouldn't clash either.
What is a good size for a first purchase?
An A3 print (30x42 cm) or a 40x50 cm piece is a good entry point. Large enough to have presence, small enough to experiment.
Do I need a certificate of authenticity for an original?
Yes. A certificate of authenticity is the minimum standard for an original painting. At KOJO Art, this is always included.
Can I get advice on which piece suits my space?
Yes. Send a photo of your space via the contact form or Instagram. I'd be happy to help.
