Wat kost een origineel schilderij en waarom is het dat waard?

What does an original painting cost and why is it worth that?

⏱️ 5 minute read

You see an original painting that appeals to you. You look at the price. And then comes the question: is it worth it? What makes a painting worth a few hundred euros more than a twenty-euro print? And why does one work cost three times as much as another?

These are fair questions. And they deserve a fair answer.

What determines the price of an original painting?

The price of an original painting is not a random number. It is built upon a number of concrete factors:

Materials. Acrylic paint, oil paint, canvas, frames, varnish, brushes. Good materials cost money, and they also determine how long a work will last. A painting on quality canvas with professional paint will last decades without fading or tearing.

Size. Larger work requires more material, more time, and more space to create. A work of 100 x 100 cm costs more than a work of 30 x 30 cm, not only because it is larger, but because its execution is more complex.

Time. A painting is not a product that rolls off an assembly line. Each work demands hours, sometimes days. Not just the painting itself, but also the contemplation, waiting for layers to dry, adjusting, deciding when it is finished.

Uniqueness. There is only one copy. This is fundamentally different from a print, no matter how beautiful it may be. An original work is unique and cannot be repaired or replaced if damaged.

The artist. Name, experience, demand. An established artist with a gallery behind them charges more, not only because their work is better, but because the market dictates it. An artist without a big name charges less, which is an advantage for you as a buyer.

At KOJO Art, I work without a gallery as an intermediary. This means you buy directly from me, without an extra margin. What you pay goes towards the work itself: the materials, the time, and the fact that you are getting something unique.

What do you get for your money?

An original painting is not a decoration that you replace after a few years. It is something that lasts. That changes as the light changes, as you change. That has a story.

Compare it to the difference between a mass-produced item and something handmade. You're not just paying for the object, but for the choices embedded in it. Every brushstroke is a decision. Every color is chosen. The work is the result of hundreds of small choices that together create something that exists nowhere else.

That's what you're buying. Not just a beautiful thing for your wall, but something real.

Original versus print: what's the difference?

A print is a reproduction of an original work. Beautiful, affordable, and a good way to bring art into your home. But it's not unique. An original painting exists only once. It has texture, depth, and a presence that a print cannot match. At KOJO Art, we offer both, so you can choose what suits your budget and wishes.

What does an original painting cost at KOJO Art?

Prices at KOJO Art vary depending on size and execution. Small original works from the Affordable Art collection start at a few tens of euros and go up to a maximum of €50. Larger original paintings on canvas cost more, depending on the size and complexity of the work.

What you always get: a handmade, unique work created in Tilburg, with attention to composition, color, and sustainable materials. And direct communication with the artist if you have questions.

No gallery margin. No intermediary. Just art, directly from the creator.

Is an original painting an investment?

Honestly: maybe. Financially, art is uncertain. The value of a work can increase if an artist becomes more well-known, but that is never guaranteed. Anyone who buys art purely as a financial investment takes a risk.

But there's another way to look at investment. A work that gives you daily pleasure, that fits into your interior, that you don't get tired of, has a value that doesn't decrease. It's an investment in your environment, in how you feel at home, in something real in a world full of reproductions.

That is an investment that always pays off.
