Brooklyn Heights
NYC Districts is a collection in which I translate the atmosphere of various New York neighborhoods into color, rhythm, and geometry. Not as literal cityscapes, but as abstract portraits of places. Each work attempts to capture something of the energy, architecture, and unique character of a district.
For this work, I chose Brooklyn Heights. For me, the neighborhood represents the encounter between warm, rhythmic facades and the open space of sky, water, and skyline. I translated that tension into a composition of stacked color fields: recognizably ordered, yet with enough shifting and nuance to keep the image constantly in motion.
The Color Palette
For this work, I chose a layered palette of warm ochre and sand tones, anthracite, muted mauve and lilac, olive green, and blue-gray. The warm earth tones refer to the architecture and urban rhythm of Brooklyn Heights, while the cooler greens and blues suggest space and sky. The color fields stand side by side but constantly influence each other.
Technique & Material
The painting is built up from vertical and horizontal color fields that together form a regular, almost architectural rhythm. Within the fields, subtle color gradients create a soft, layered appearance rather than harsh, rigid geometry. The composition invites close examination of the transitions and appreciation of the whole from a distance.
