Chisō (地層) — the Japanese word for geological layer, stratum. The silent witnesses of time stored in the ground. Each layer carries a story: of what was there, what grew, what disappeared. This painting is a meditation on that depth. The warm pink-brown and sandy beige tones were not chosen at random — they are the colors of the earth itself, of clay and loam, of roots and ancient rock.
The Color Palette
For this work, I chose a palette that breathes the earth: warm mauve-brown tones as the dominant color, transitioning into soft sandy beige and off-white in the center. Not all nuances are immediately visible, but they live within the work. They are colors you don't see, but feel. The soft transition from outside to inside is reminiscent of a cross-section of the earth — layer after layer, each with its own story.
Technique & Materials
Painted with acrylics on MDF, built up layer by layer. The surface has a subtle texture that looks different in changing light. The clean composition with the centered color field is inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of ma — the power of the empty space that envelops everything.
