Komorebi (木漏れ日) — the Japanese word for the filtered light that falls through the leaves of trees. Not the full sunlight, but the soft, moving patches of light seeping through a canopy in a mystical forest. A moment of earthly silence that you feel before you can name it. This work captures that feeling on a single plane.
The Color Palette
For this work, I chose a palette that connects earth and light: warm olive green and golden yellow tones as the dominant colors, complemented by subtle layers of khaki and off-white. Not all nuances are immediately visible, but they live within the work. These are colors you don’t see, but feel. The soft horizontal bands create a rhythm reminiscent of light moving through tree branches.
Technique & Materials
Painted with acrylics on MDF, built up layer by layer. The surface has a subtle texture that looks different in changing light. The clean composition and the tranquility of the color field are inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of ma — the power of empty space.
