Yūgen — the Japanese concept for the deep, mysterious feeling that arises when you experience the beauty of the universe. Not as a clear insight, but as a whisper. A presence you feel, but cannot name. This triptych captures that feeling in three original works on wood panel, together forming a rhythm of silence.
The Colour Palette
For this work, I chose a palette that breathes depth and mystery: carmine red as the dominant warm tone, complemented by Prussian blue, burnt sienna, green, and zinc white. Not all colours are directly visible, but they live within the work. These are colours you don't see, but feel. The wood grain remains visible beneath the paint layers, giving the work a vibrancy that canvas or paper cannot match.
Technique & Material
Painted with acrylic paint on wood panel, built up layer by layer in many applications. Inspired by the Japanese printmaking art of ukiyo-e: the flat colour fields, the crisp edges, the tranquility that speaks through what is not there. The three panels are composed as a single whole, but each also speaks individually.
