Collection: New York City Districts.
向上 (kōjō) — progress. Each district in this series is a new chapter in that story. Manhattan as a metaphor for movement, growth, and never-ending energy.
What is New York City Districts?
New York City Districts is an ongoing series of geometric abstract paintings that explores the iconic neighborhoods of Manhattan through color, form, and composition. Each piece captures the essence of a district (Soho, Central Park, Midtown) in acrylic paint on canvas. Created by Jordy Koumans (KOJO Art) in Tilburg, Netherlands. Available as large originals and smaller studies (Affordable Art).
A Geometric Journey Through Manhattan
The New York City Districts. series explores the iconic neighborhoods and areas of Manhattan through the lens of color, form, and geometry. Each work captures the essence of a district – from the bohemian energy of Soho to the vertical grandeur of Midtown Manhattan, from the green oasis of Central Park to the bustling streets that make this city what it is.
The Concept
New York has inspired me for years. After my Skyline series, in which I explored the city through time (Dawn, Day, Night), I now delve deeper into the individual neighborhoods that together form the character of Manhattan. Each district gets its own color palette, its own composition, its own story – but together they form a coherent whole.
The Process
Each work begins digitally, where I experiment with color palettes and proportions until the essence of a district becomes palpable. Then follows the painting process: layer by layer, with student-grade acrylic paint, glycerin for a longer working time, and Frog Tape for crisp geometric lines. The process takes an average of 2-5 weeks per work.
The Works
- Soho – Muted, earthy tones reflecting the artistic, bohemian atmosphere of downtown Manhattan
- Part of Central Park – Natural serenity with rich browns, soft yellows, and blues capturing the green oasis
- Coming Soon II – Intense colors and vertical tension capturing the skyline and business energy
- More districts – In development
