Light Falling Where You Least Expect It
A lucarne is a dormer window. Small, high, often forgotten. It is not at eye level but above you — an opening in the roof that lets in light where you least expect it. In old Parisian buildings, in studios, in forgotten attics. It is not a large window. It is a fragment. A glimpse. Enough to know that there is something on the other side.
Lucarne — a meditative work about exactly that. Two dark planes, vertically stacked on a weathered, layered background. Like dormer windows in an old building. Like openings to another state of being. You look at it and wonder what lies behind — not with restlessness, but with quiet curiosity.
This work is about the space between seeing and understanding. About the moment when an opening says more than what is behind it. Intimate. Silent. Charged.
The Color Palette
Deep teal and forest green for the planes that reflect light from the darkness. Warm lavender and soft beige for the background that breathes and lives. The brushstrokes are visible and expressive — not a smooth surface, but a skin that has kept track of time. The colors collide gently, without haste.
Technique & Material
The work begins with a painted base layer — a soft gradient, applied by hand with a brush. That layer is no longer visible in its entirety, but it is still there. It shimmers through the surface, sets the tone, and colors the atmosphere from within. The top layers were then applied with palette knives and a squeegee — broad, direct, without hesitation. The base layer sets the mood. The top layer provides the form. Together, they create a work that has more than what meets the eye at first glance.
Painted with acrylics on canvas, built up in multiple layers until the silence was right.
